What is joint manipulation?

Joint manipulation is a type of passive movement of a skeletal joint. It is usually aimed at one or more ‘target’ synovial joints with the aim of achieving a therapeutic effect.

Clinical effects and mechanisms of action:

  • Relief of musculoskeletal pain
  • Shortened time to recover from acute back sprains
  • Increase in active range of motion (AROM)
  • Increase blood flow
  • Enhanced healing and delivery of nutrition to joint surfaces
  • Inhibition of pain signals
  • Physiological effects on the central nervous system*** The medical information on this site is provided as an information resource only, and is not to be used or relied on for any diagnostic or treatment purposes. ***
